B1/B2 visa appointment: how to book, reschedule, and get an earlier date

If you need a B1/B2 visa appointment, the booking steps are fairly clear once your paperwork is in order. The frustrating part is rarely the booking — it is getting an earlier date when the first one the system offers is months away.

Here is how the process works, and where people get stuck.

What a B1/B2 visa is

The B1/B2 is a non-immigrant visitor visa — it is for temporary visits, not for living or working in the U.S.

• B1 covers business travel: meetings, conferences, contract talks.
• B2 covers tourism, visiting family, and medical treatment.

Most applicants are issued the two combined as a single B1/B2 visa.

How to book a B1/B2 visa appointment

For most applicants the flow is the same:

• Complete the DS-160 form online and save the confirmation barcode.
• Pay the visa (MRV) fee. You generally cannot schedule until the fee is registered.
• Sign in to the official scheduling site, ais.usvisa-info.com, and book your interview at a consulate.

Getting an earlier date

The scheduling system has a built-in reschedule feature. If your interview is far out and you need to travel sooner, you can try to move it up:

1. Sign in to ais.usvisa-info.com.
2. Open your existing appointment and choose the reschedule option.
3. Look at the calendar, pick an earlier date, and confirm.

Why earlier B1/B2 dates disappear fast

B1/B2 is one of the highest-volume visa categories, so demand for earlier dates is heavy.

The system does not release earlier dates on a timer. They open when other applicants cancel or reschedule, freeing their old slot back into a first-come pool. At a busy consulate, one freed slot is visible to everyone searching at the same moment, and the first person to confirm gets it. That can happen in seconds — which is why earlier slots vanish so fast.

Watching more than one consulate

If you can travel to more than one city, watch all of them. Earlier dates often appear where you are not looking, and availability at each post moves independently. Wait times vary by post and season, so the consulate with the soonest date is not always the obvious one.

A note for renewals: dropbox / interview waiver

Not everyone needs an in-person interview. Some applicants renewing an existing visa may qualify for the interview waiver — often called “dropbox” — which skips the interview entirely.
